Actually it's the headliner on the driver's side of my '79. I've glued it back up there with RTV,Gorilla glue and Liguid Nails(not all at once). It just recently let go again! Anyone have any idea of what might keep it up there? The disconnects are in several areas,some where the toothy thing goes in the cardboard,some where the round things hook to the metal tabs and some between the round things. I really hate to lose a battle and I'm not doing real well on this one at the moment! Thanks up front for any ideas!

Remove the headliner board from the roof panel. Remove any hardware on there, then peel off the headliner material slowly. There is a thin layer of foam that deteriorates with the heat. The cells in the foam become brittle and break contact with each other causing the sag. If you want to reuse the same cloth, rub the old foam off of the back of the material and the board. You can put the cloth back on with a new layer of foam or replace the material with new headliner material or you can put the material on without the foam. Buy a large spray can of 3M Super Adhesive (dark red can). Enlist someone to help. Lay the board on a cloth or paper that is large enough to catch the overspray around the edges. Once the board is sprayed so that it is covered, let it stand for about 2 minutes. Then with help, start at one end and roll the material across the board being careful not to get any puckers in it. Do not pull it too tight (If it stretches) because it will stress the foam backing and the cells will separate prematurely once it dries. Be sure to place the material on straight when you start because once it is stuck, it is stuck and you won't be able to remove it without damaging the foam backing. Do not push down on the material too hard becasue you may make the adhesive bleed through. I have done this job on a number of cars over the years with cloth and vinyl material. The key is to take your time. I hope this helps.

 

Gosh L46 I wish I had known you a few years ago! The headliner in my GMC pickup did exactly what you described and I had spray glue all over everything when I finally folded the whole thing up and stuck it in the dumpster! Where you mentioned "remove the board from the roof panel" I don't have to do that,it did it all on it's own! That's what I'm trying to glue back up. The fabric/vinyl/whatever is just fine in it's relation to the board part,just need to get the board back in the panel.
Thanks loads for the help,now I can deal with the fabric if it decides to come down!

Strongly suggest you get new headliner mat'l as you won't be very happy with the appearance of just glueing the bare mat'l back on. It will not be smooth and will show every deformity under it. Don't as me how I know.
