Default steering column

I am having trouble because I can not get my key back to the lock position to remove it on my 76' it will do every other function but back to lock so I can remove it. I believe there is a gear that needs set, I do not know how to get to the gear or even if thats the problem, any help would be appreciated.

Fuzzy

PS I put a new ignition lock in already.

Default RE: steering column

Hi:

The same thing happened to me on my 72 four speed, and in my case the nut came off of the reverse linkage rod so it wouldn't go into reverse to activate the reverse lock-out mechanism for the steering.

If you have a four speed transmission, it could be that the reverse lock-out mechanism is jammed, or disconnected. This mechanism consists of a cable that runs from the manual four speed transmission to a lever just below the steering column at the firewall (under the hood). When you lift the T handle on the stick shift and put the transmission in reverse, it pulls on the cable to activate the steering wheel lock. When the steering wheel is locked, then you are able to turn the key back to the lock position and remove it.

I am not sure how the steering wheel lock-out works on an automatic transmission but it is probably similiar.

Hope this helps!
