hey guys in no way was I trying to discourage or encourage the use of header rapping. I just wanted to tell you about my experience with it. This car I was talking about would have bin running about 6000 rpm to 7800 rpm with much smaller pipes then you would use on a Corvette. That could have a lot to do with the pipes getting hot behind the collector. I was just trying to say to give that area behind the collectors a good look. Fiberglass and heat don't mix very well.

 

I have had the header wrap on for about a year now. The headers are old and of unknown origin, they came with the car. I have had absolutely no problems with the headers since wrapping them.

I do understand that the heat has to go somewhere, and w/ "header wrap" it may possibly be that the head pipesdo get hotter than a head pipe coming off headers w/o wrap. I just wonder "to what extent"or "how much hotter" the pipes actually get.
If I had to guess, I'd say that the head pipes wouldn't get that much hotter w/ wrapped headers, BUT, in our 'Vettes, just alittle more heat is only making it that much more uncomfortable as the interior of our 'Vettes is a hot place to be, especially in the summer, and w/oA/C.
My opinion; I'd wrap the headers and do a really good insulation job on the floor in-order to keepas much heat as possible (including the extra heat)out of the interior. The "cooler engine compartment" would be well worth doing the good insulation job on the floor.

 

Don't forget the foam collar between the bell housing and firewall and the foil blanket on the bottom of the tunnel over the tranny.

The reason I mention this is cuz most of our cars have long since lost these or they just deteriorated to thepoint that there's no trace left or bubba removed them to save weight.

I just got my other computer - the one with MORE Corvette restoration pictures on it -fixed. I will post an article on how I insulated the interior of my Covette - it really made a BIG difference.
