1989 Corvette New Buyer Information Needed
I am possibly have a line on a 1989 Corvette. This would be my first Corvette and I am looking for some guidance on what to look for when test driving this vehicle. My understanding is the interior is very rough with extensive tears in both the driver and passenger seat along with the center console cover coming off. I do not know how many miles but it appears that this may be a 6 speed manual. It is not a convertible. I understand that it has a removable center top. Any information would be appreciated. Have a great day.
Make sure the motor is cold. Let the seller pull the trigger, and you watch the exhaust. Black puff = leaky injectors. Not deal killer.
Weatherstripping. All. Back hatch, doors, removable top.
Interior door panels.
Digital instrument cluster intermittent dimming.
Follow seller on highway; have him signal you to drop the hammer once. He thinks you wanna' see the acceleration. Watch the exhaust.
When you get back, let the moto idle. If it lopes, you got vacuum leak. Not a deal killer, but a pain to fix.
If auto, go from neutral to park, back to neutral, then to reverse, all with brake firmly on. Feel for play/clunk in d'shaft u-joints, and half-shaft u-joints.
Look inside front wheel at grease fitting, for signs of greasing.
Got pics on the web?
Anybody else???

Torn seats and a damaged console it very common on an 18 year old corvette, My 1992 had the same problems as do most of the C4's that have been driven a fair amountto a lot of miles. The center console lid aloneon mine ran about $275.00.
In the new Mid-America Motorworks catalog they have them . Page 39 depending on year running
from $160.99 - $249.00 (Damn, these must be rare indeed.) check www.mamotorworks.com or
possibly/probably Ecklers catalog could have them also. Appears to be a pretty valuable commodity.
