WELCOME ABOARD, IN MY OPINION IT WOULD BE LESS PAINLESS TO CHANGE THE WHOLE COLUM THAN DISECT THE OLD ONE. YOU CAN PICK ON UP W/ KEYS FOR $100 ON EBAY. THE CHANGE OUT IS BASIC AND THE WIRING IS THE SAME. JUST MAKE SURE THE COLUM IS OUT OF A '84 OR '85 GOOD LUCK.

Bad news on this one I've been here before. If you have the tools and the time and a lot of patence it's doable by a novice but I tried and you really have to go deep down n there to tighten the bolts that are working loose.
If you live in or near a city look in your paper or Greensheet or ad sack for someone who does GM steering collum repair and for a exorbanate fee he will get it done in 15 minutes.

At least you don't have an airbag,so removing your wheel should not be too difficult....the one main nut,if I remember corecctly sometimes comes a tad loose and the whole column shakes...it happened with my old '85 Regal and tightening that up seemed to fix the problem....and remember, back then,GM had "parts bin" stuff on all their cars,so the Vette's column is no exception.... similar to the one in the Buick to a "T".....savea few minor details, but the same unit nonetheless...try it and let me know what happens, will ya??? God bless...Joe.

The vette column has a telescoping steering wheel. I have done a few and it is a task. You will need a pin puller to pull the pivot pins out and have to reall watch how it comes apart for reassembly.

The guy that has done a couple of GM cars for me says he can tell by the number of broke plastic parts when he does one if a novice has attempted to do one.
I watched him do one and yep little parts come flying out and every one has to go back in where it belongs.
It's doable but like working on watches it ain't for me.
I have done windows and regulators and I would much rather tackle one of those than a steering column.
The 89 IROC Camaro I watched him do was a telescoping wheel too.
You can get a loaner on the tools from Auto Zone . You absolutely need a couple and the guy that worked on mine had several modified to make it easier too.
