RE: 85 Shifter boot instalation
Hello there.Do you have an autmatic? If you do I believe you're going to need a set of snap ring pliers. You'll need it to pry out the **** itself, which can be a tad troublesome but will come out with the proper persuasion. After that, the boot shouldn't be that tricky to replace.

I you have an automatic here are the steps:
1. Put your shifter in the Drive position with the parking brake on.
2. You will need to take off the shift **** button. You can do this by prying it off with a flat tip screwdriver
3. You will see inside a U shaped ring (that has two very small holes at the ends) . This is the only thing holding the **** in place. You can take it out by getting by either pliers or getting two long and thin nalis and fixing them to the two small holes. You will then attempt to bend the "U pin" appart to remove it. Be carefull not to bend it too much (bend it just enough to remove it) because you will need to put the U pin back on.
4. After you remove the **** remove all of the screws holding the shifter plate in place.
5. Remove the shifter plate by lifting it slightly up and sliding slightly down. Then detach the cigarette lighter.
6. You will see on the back of the shifter plate that there are two screws holding the shift boot in place
7. Remove them and install the new boot
8. Repeat steps in reverse.
