Default 86 won’t idle

Hi everyone. I apologize for being “that guy” who posts a problem with his second ever post but I am struggling.

I recently picked up an 86 Automatic with some issues. The car will not start without giving it a couple of pumps to the throttle then it will not stay running without a little throttle. The dash is out so I don’t know how many revs it takes to keep it going. I’ve checked fuel pressure and I get 40 psi at key on and it stays there while running. I replaced the MAF after reading some posts and it is a fairly cheap and easy swap.

I had the codes pulled and this is what I found:486311045

Code

Loss of 24x signal

Dtc 36

Loss of e spark signal 2

Mass air flow sensor burnoff circuit 4

Dtc 43 low voltage electric spark control

44 lean exhaust left side

45 rich exhaust left side

46 power steering pressure switch failure

51 faulty prom ecm/ pcm

52 ecm temp low temperature

54 fuel pump mixture or ecm fault

Egr solenoid #2 failure

with all the ECM related codes I decided to swap that out too. Still no change

Additionally. There is a lot heat around the center console and it will dump black smoke if revved

Not really sure why pumping the accelerator has any effect on it whatsoever since it's fuel injected. Have you tried holding the accelerator partially open while trying to start it? The black smoke indicates that it's running way rich.

The heat coming from the console probably indicates that there is an opening someplace underneath where air is coming from the engine compartment.

Try replacing your IAC valve. Sounds like your running way rich. They have been known to cause issues. They're cheap and easy to replace.

I picked up a new IAC valve this weekend. The old one is scarred up like someone took it off with channel locks. I am waiting on the new throttle body gasket to put it all back together

Get an original service manual. They are very helpful. If you replace the IAC, check the voltage on the TPS (throttle position sensor) as well. Between those two items you might fix a lot of your problems.

Let us know how that works out.

Be sure to clean the throttle body while it's off.

I have the service manual. I cleaned the throttle body and replaced the IAC. After I reinstalled the throttle body I adjusted the TPS voltage to 0.54. The car still won’t idle. I have checked all over for vacuum leaks and haven’t found any. I have ordered a cable to be able to connect to the OBD1 so I can read the codes again.

I think I probably have an exhaust leak as well. The center console gets so hot that after running it for a while tonight the carpet was getting burnt

Hmmm. Have you tried spraying something like carb cleaner around the intake area to see if the idle (such as it is) changes? That's how I found a vacuum leak once. Fooled me.
