Default dash cluster and turn signals

just bought an 84 with dash light problems. Sometimes my dash lights up as it should and other times it is totally dark. When it goes dark the two turn signal indicators are lite up steady and the high beam indicator in between is also illuminated. When I turn on the headlights it is a crap shoot whether or not it is illuminated or dark. Oddly enough during day driving I can see the displays, all be it dimly. I can tell that a bulb , or something is burned out behind the range, and oil pressure indicator. Any one have any ideas. I am wondering if the cluster needs to be rebuilt and/ or additional problems are there. Also the tachometer, even when it lights up, does not appear to be working. Could it be a sensor or simply be unhooked from some point.

My 85 coupe did the same thing (turn signals and high beam lights on, the rest of the dash dark) when I got it 2 1/2 years ago. The problem was a bad ground. After taking it out and running a new ground from both grounds coming from the dash to through the firewall directly to the ground from the batery to the frame, I haven't had any problems since (about 2 years now).

If you have to have the dash cluster on those types of displays they put in the early C4's refurbished, all I can say is OUCH! They run anywhere from $1000 - $2000.

Success!!!!!!!!!!! I took my cluster out and followed the directions from the website at www.corvettedashclusterservice.com, put it all back together and it works like it was new. While I was in there I replaced all the bulbs, even the turn signals. Chevy dealer wanted $32.00 ea. for the 882 bulbs so I decided I would go with the 194's. Only problem with that is the socket for the 194 is different then the 882 and the dealer I dealt with could not get the socket for the 194 in this application. I was able to get 168 bulbs with the right socket and they seem to be slightly brighter then the 194's. I was concerned about heat so we tested them against the 194's and they did not seem to be any warmer so I decided to go with them. So far so good. Other then waiting about 5 days to resolve the bulb issue I would say that I had about 5-6 hours from removal to reinstall. Not as daunting a task as I thought it might be. Thanks all for the input and advice.
