Fixing Air Conditioning

Fixing Air Conditioning
I live In Hawaii and the days can get kinda hot and my AC is currently non functioning. My question is, what is the running rate at this point to get the AC fixed? Right now its the original R12 unit and from what I was told, I will need to get it converted to the recent R34 (I believe) system. I want to get as much info as I can so that when I go to get it looked at, im not gonna get taken advantage of. Do I need to get it converted or can I stick with the R12 unit? It blows out air and the heater works, its just that when I select AC, it just blows air thats not cold. Thanks.

RE: Fixing Air Conditioning
I converted my '87 to R134, with system flush products from the local retailer. I did the 'flush' twice just to make sure. Then do a proper charge. Worked like a charm.
Only thing is when you're checkin' to see if any R12 is left in the system, don't hold the valve open with a screwdrivertoo long while the old stuff vents out.
