Help me pick a stroker kit..
Ok heres the deal.
1984 C4 Crossfire Engine (L-82?)
150k Miles
Project Car
Compression Test:
Most cylinders above 100, except clyinder 1 was really low 80ish psi.
Lots of Gaskets Leaking
Lots of Misc Problems - AC Not working, heater blower not working. Lots of "Previous Owner Wire modifications / Vaccum hose mods" etc, burning lots of oil (valve seals, possibly rings as well).
Well basically I want to rebuild the engine and Make a few tweaks while I have it all apart. I was wanting to see if i could get a stroker kit for it and started doing research. It does look like I can get a kit easily, but theres a few other changes that started to confuse me. What I would like to do is Bore out the engine .040 over. (I know a stroker kit for 383, need .060, but Id rather just go .040 incase something goes wrong later, and I have to get it bored out again.)
Basically What tweaks I would like to make:
1. Get a stroker kit ( 400 Crank, piston rods, pistons, new rods.) Started getting a little scared with the rod length changes etc. So if you can recommend a kit, or explain how to get the longest possible rods that will work without to much side flex etc. That would be great.
2. Get a new Cam - Saw a 260 and a 268 on ecklers, but it looked like it was for a stock engine. Would either of these work ok with a stoker kit? or would I be better off using something differnt.
3. Rebuild the Heads, Valve seals, springs,
4. Replace all gaskets, and do some general cleaning of the engine compartment.
5. Well im taking the engine out might as well do some headers. Having a hard time finding any that will work on an 84 vette besides a couple of sets on ebay. Any tested suggestions out there?
6. I am going to the self ported / hacking of the X-fire Intake, due to budget restraints ive decided to pass on the Xram.
I have started to dismantle the engine bit by bit. I found a wire connection on the AC Compressor that was busted, and most likey most of, or all of the problem with the ac.
I have found a few vaccum hoses that were disconnected, and a few wires that were laying against stuff and got melted.
So pulling the motor was a great move in my eyes, Its a nice little project cars, im not expecting it to do 10 second 1/4s or nothing. Just want to add a little power while im rebulding it. I may at some point put in forced induction, but not at this time, so I am guessing since it will be higer compression I will want to use forged pistons etc.
Id like to keep the expense(s) for the stroker / machining down to about 2k if possible.

1. Eagle makes some great products for those on a budget. Never heard about any reliability issues from them, though i would recommend a forged crank if you are looking at FI or nitrous in the future. Talk to an engine builder and they can help you make the best desicions.
2. Sure you can you a stock cam on a stroker engine, but if you are going to buy a new cam, you should get the best one for your goal. Think about if you need to be worried about emissions, drivability, and make sure that it is suitable for your power band. You can call the cam manfs. directly, and they can give you their opinion on the best cam. Get as many opinions as possible.
3. Make sure that the cam matches the specs of the heads. Your builder can help you with this.
5. Im really surprised that hooker or the other major manfs. dont make headers for your car, its just a regular SBC
6. Im not real familier with the X-fire intake, but i would imagine that this would be the limiting factor as to how much power you will be able to make with this engine.
Take lots and lots and lots of pictures when taking everything apart. It will help in the long run.
