I bought a 92 LT1 6 speed about 2 1/2 years ago, with 127000 miles at that time. I have replaced the water pump and put u-joints in the rear half shafts (a lot easier than I was afraid it would be) and changed most of the fluids but have not had to do any major work on the car. At this time it is just under 140000 miles. When I bought my car it was as stock as could be, nobody had cobbled it up and no amature hot rod modifications had been performed. That might be the best advice, find a car that has not been modified, it probably has not been beat on too hard either. I think I paid $8100 for my car, probably a fair price for me and the seller.

Check with your insurance company. Since you have a new truck that I assume will be your beater, you might qualify for a program that some companies have regarding mileage. For example, here in FL with State Farm, I insure my Vette for driving under 7,500 miles per year to save some money. You can also vary some deductable to further bring the price down. As far as age goes, you'll have check that out. Clean record will definately help.

I had a '91 coupe I loved. While I still owned it, I bought an '01 convert. The only thing I didn't like about the C4 was that it was hard to get in and out of and a little clostraphoic as compared to the C5. As much as I loved the C4, the C5 is much improved.

I bought a 95 with 103K from adealer for $10,500 6 months ago. I will tell you to be prepared to throw a little money repairing minor things that may be wrong with it. I bought this as a "toy". I am 30 year old male with clean driving record and full coverage insurance is roughly $50/ month. Talk to your insurance agent about getting a discount since (I'm assuming) this won't be your primary vehicle.Farmers Insuranceput some stipulations on the car which didn't bother me, such as

1. no driver under 25 years old
2. don't drive to work

Hope this helps.

I found a '92 vette a local dealership. It has 77k miles.

The good:

-Seats look very good. They probably always had covers on them or were replaced in the last couple of years. Not one tear or hole.
-Only 77k miles
-Interior is okay, not bad for a 15 year old car, typical stuff. Surfaces worn down smooth to a glossy finish where people put their hands, etc.

The bad:
-The exterior isn't in that great of shape compared to the interior...nothing major though...
-Weather stripping is pretty much shot on the whole car. Will have to replace all of it.
-Wheels are horrible condition. They must have scrapped up against a few curbs over its life
-Hood has a 1-2 inch crack at the front edge
-a spiderweb (non bigger than a golfball) here or there along with some scratches

The dealer is asking $9,500. The car no doubt needs about$1500+ of work, mostly costmetic.

I was thinking about making an offer of $9,500 including TT&L (or about $8500+ TTL) I think Texas charges sales tax now based on blue book instead of what you pay (Used to be based on what you actually paid...bastards!)

Do you think that is areasonable offer under the assumption that the engine and drivetrain are in good conditon and carfax shows it to be a good car free of any major problems? I will definitely take it to my local mechanic to run a compression test, look things over, etc.

Three more questions:

Could I get the wheels refinished or chromed? About how much does that run, typically? I have seen old rusted up golf clubs restored to practically brand new condition for not that much. I may look into getting a used set of better condition rims.

About how much doesreplacing all the weather stripping cost?

How canI fix spider web's or small cracks? Can that be done on a budget? I am scared thinking of how much body work on a car can be. It may be cheaper to try to find a white C4 hood on ebay and just replace it. Most of the problems I saw were on the hood.

If it all checks out, the above is a helluva deal, especially if its an LT4.
