Oil Change Intervals
On my '95 LT1, the recommended oil change interval is 7,000 miles and I'm using the Mobil synthetic. I'm from the old school that likes to change oil every 3,000 miles and most miles are freeweay. Are most of you going the 7,000 miles or sooner?
Thanks,
Ron

Here's my view, if the oil looks good with 3000 on it I run it alittle longer. I think the 3000 mile thing has been over rated mostly due to the advertisement of the 10 min. oil change bussines. If you service the car yourself and use high quality oil I'd run it longer. A few (20) ago when I was driving over the road, oil changes were done around the 30,000 mile interval, many times that was based on how many pounds of fuel were used and an oil analysis.
It depends a lot on how you drive.
If you usually drive long enough for the oil to get up to temperature and boil off the condensation and unburned gasoline, you can go a long time on an oil change, but if you drive shorter trips where the oil does NOT get up to temperature, I would change it every 3000.
Contamination is what kills your oil and getting it good and hot boiils off a significant amount of the contaminants.

78Buckshot, I agree entirely with you. Back in the 50's and 60's, we didn't have the complex oils we have now. We changed our oil every 10,000 or 15,000 miles with just a filter change in between. I agree, the drive-in oil change stations suggest 3,000 mile changes to fatten their profits, andhave done this strictly for profit. The way oils are now ( synthetic), they don't "break down" as readily. If your synthetic oil is clear, you don't need to change it. This advice is from a GM Master Mechanic right from GM headquarters who I know personally. Everybody does what they feel is right, and that's good.
