Default Radiator Cooling Fan

I just bought a 85 vetteshould the cooling fan in front of the radiator be running all the time? It turns when I turn the key on? Should this one run like the fan that is connected to the pulley at the engine What temps should the fans kick in on/ What is the normal running temps the engine should run at?

Thanks

John

Hi John, No the auxiliary fan in front of the radiator shouldn't run all the time. Could be several reasons why it is, you could have a bad temp sensor thats stuck closed keeping it running. You should have a sensor located on the passengers side of the motor between the #6 and #8 spark plugs. With the fan running, try disconnecting the wire from the sensor and see if the fan shuts off, if so I would replace the sensor with a new oem sensor. There's a sensor on the drivers side of the motor between the #1 and #3 spark plugs but I think that one is the temp sending unit for the temp guage on your dash. I also think there is another sensor located on the front of the intake manifold for the ecm. I'm not sure about this, but the ecm may be controlling the auxiliary fan. Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me will jump in here that knows what sensor does what.

Another reason is someone may have wired the fan into the ignition switch somehow, causing it to run all the time.

You said.... "Should this one run like the fan that is connected to the pulley at the engine"?

Do you have a fan connected to a pulley on the front of the engine?? You shouldn't have. My 85 has two electric fans.

Thanks ,
I take back it is not aa fan connected to the pully it is electric fan and seams to kick on about 220 F to 230F.

On the fan in front of the Rad , It looks like someone attached a white wire to the green/whitewire attached to a swith/relay on the raditor ? The white wire goes to the air conditioner compressor to the connector on top and is attached tothe green wire ? When the air is on and the compressor kicks in it shut off the fan ?(Seems you would wantthe fanon when it kicks in?) Any way I think they by passed the the original sensor on the engine maybe because it was not working or somthing , I think I am going to go get a new ssensor and put it in and see if that makes it work right and then un hook the white wire added? What are thoughts on this?

Or Should I hook it up to the other wire on the air cond compressor ( Black) ?

What is normal operating temps for the vette?

The temp on mine runs around 180 -185 on the highway, and in heavy traffic it runs between 220 - 230, the fan also comes on at this temp too. From what I've read, that is normal operating temp. The fan behind the radiator (engine side) comes on when I turn on the AC. I do hear a fanturn on when the temp gets up around 225, I take it, thats the auxiliary fan in front of the radiator coming on. Will have to look and see the next time I hear itturn on.
