Not sure if the 96 is the same but my 93 GM Service manual describes the following:
Remove shifter button by prying up, shift button retainer, snap ring, and shift ****. no mention of set screw w/ the automatic just the manual tranny. I took mine off a while back to replace the light (position indicator) and just strongarmed it loose after a little wd 40 the snap ring attaches around the control lever. Hope this helps.

Hi!! You'll need a set of snap ring pliers and then just enjoy yourself pulling it out! I did it to my '96 to put one of those neat-looking "carbon fiber look" shift *****.But before I put the new one on,I put a key ring with a little logo that I got at the Air and Space Museum. It reads, "REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT"!!!!!
