Default STALLING PROBLEM 88

HI ALL.

I HAVE AN 88 4+3 350. THE PROBLEM STARTED ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO AS I PULLED UP AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS IT STALLED. RESTARTED OK. DROVE FOR A FEW MILES THEN STALLED AGAIN. I NOTICED THAT SPEEDO AND OD HAD STOPPED WORKING AT SAME TIME. NOW IF I DRIVE AND GET TO NORMAL TEMP AND CAR STALLS IT WONT RESTART. I HAVE ALL IGNITION LIGHTS. LEAVE THE CAR SITTING FOR ABOUT 15MIN AND STARTS FINE. FUEL PRESSURE IS FINE AND IT HAS NEW ALTERNATOR AND BATTERY. STALLING/ SPEEDO / OD HAPPENED AT SAME TIME. CAN ANYONE HELP. RELAYS? SENSORS? THANKS I LIVE IN PERTH AUSTRALIA.

THANKS AGAIN. WAYNE

Wow, Perth. I live in in central North Carolina, US, near Raleigh. During the 80s I spent a lot of time in Perth on an assignment working with the State Electricity Board.

Anyway, the stalling could be several things and its probalby going to be messy to fin it. My real advice is to get it to a good shop that you trust and have them look at it. The only think I can suggest, if you are really going to do the wok yourself, is to carefully go through the fuse box one by one and check each. I don't know the 88 that specifically, but many later vettes such as my 02 and the 06 have two buseboxes, one under the hood and one for the body inside the inerior (on a C5 its under the carpet and panel at the passenger's feet).

It would really help you to have a service manual with its wiring diagrams. I would not rule out the possibility that the stalling and the sppedo and OD not working is a coincidence, not all stemming from one cause.

If you proceed and need more advice, are there any other symptoms? How does it stall?--does it sputter to a stop as if its trying to stay running or just go dead instantly? When you try to restart does it crank? Did you replace the fuel filter?

it could be a variety of different things. before you take it in to a shop, try doing a couple of things yourself:

first i would check for any vaccum leaks, check the pcv valve, air filter

then did you say you had any codes from the engine? that can tell you a lot

check all spark plug wires and the connections

and i would check the engine timing.

let me know what you find

do you have the optispark distributor? If so that is your problem. My 94 was doing the samething. had to replace mine.

It could be a bad coil. When it gets hot a broken wire seperates and you lose spark. Then when it cools it makes contact again. I'vehad it happen to coils, altenators, anything with fine coiled wires. Next time it quits, check to see if you have spark. It's a place to start looking.

Sounds like the ignition module inside the distributor is starting to fail.

My 86 did the same thing after awhile it finally quit running altogether.

Easy to fix.
