advice on buying 98 6speed vs. automatic

Yes, your mileage will be higher (both city and highway) by a couple of MPG if you compare an MN6 to an A4 tranny. After all, the MN6 has two overdrive gears, compared to the A4s single OD gear.
If you drive it gently you can get 30 mpg on the highway with a stock M6 -- I know, my ZO6 would do that, in fact almost 31 if I kept the speed to around the speed limit (60-65). An automatic will not do quite that good. In town, if you learn to drive the M6 for economy (never rev it high -- shift at very low revs, say 1800 - 2200 rpm, and use plenty of throttle - even full throttle - in these low revs to keep up with traffic) you can get surprisingly good mileage - 21-22 mpg --- again, that was my experience. The auto shifts for itself and will probably get only about 18.
