Default Body Side Molding

I've just started looking at C5's and some have a piece of side molding in the center of the door and some don't, what qualifies that, and is it removable? It seems some cars have it and some don't even in the same year.
Thanks!

It's a after market peel and stick door ding guard, they come with a primer finish. You need to take them to a body shop to be painted to match your car - then just peel & stick.

It was an option. Some people like it, some don't. Some claim that it helps stability at higher speeds. If you get one that has it you can peel it off if you don't like it.

( " ok so if i remove my molding my paint should be fine under it correct?")

I wouldn't remove it without some careful investigation. If the car was not painted , completely assembled at the factory by the robotics, then you would be ok,.. except in the case where your car may have had enough exposure to uv ( the sun) that the color beneath the molding will be a darker color if only slightly than the rest of your vehicle.

If either of the above are true then you will be faced with having new moldings painted to put back on etc.... Color match on parts painted off the vehicle when the paint has had some time to age is more difficult than just trying to "panel paint" which is a pain in itself.

If you can live with the moldings, leave them in place, or take it to a very good shop who specializes in quality paint work to let them evaluate the situation.

Any time you need paint work be sure to look at some vehicles that the shop has painted, and be sure they have a history painting Vettes, as they require different preparation.

Stroker...
