while driving home my check engine lite came . i shut the motor down restarted and the check engine lite continued to flash. i drove the car home it was smoking bnadly. when i went to the rear of the car there was a very heavy gas smell. suggestion? the car was running fine before the incident. the car has 80,000 mi's and is holding good oil pressure and not overheating.

 

The first thing I would do is check for disconnected hoses (especially vacuum hoses/lines), spark plug wires, connections at the airbridge/accordian to throttle body, air bridge to Mass Air Flow sensor, and anything else that is visually not right. Chances are that you'll find the culprit.

 

problem solved... found #1 plug was dead...replaced now everything is fine.

 

Great! That was within the second tier of inspections I was going to recommend.
