hard to answer. what does the motor need ?eg, ya find that out when ya take it apart. what do ya want to put in the motor ? eg, mods .what are your skills ? eg, this aint no 350 small block. ls motors require special tools, nuts and bolts cant be reused, gasket surface finish, fastner tightening, engine manual is a must. my advise save a bunch of time get a crate motor

a crate motor is ok, but it's still stock as hell. If you're looking to rebuild like upgrade the whole engine to 650 hp, then you're looking at a LOT of time and little bit of money. Are you tearing down an ls1 engine, or building the whole motor from block to plugs? might i suggest going forged internals if you plan on that route-never know when you'll have the need for a super charger [8D]

If the cylinder bores are worn much you have to get a new block. Can't really bore the LS aluminum blocks. If nothing is much worn you can hone the cylinder bores, get +3 over pistons and new bearings, ahve the machining done, and have it back int he car for less than a thousand if you do the work yourself. But chances are if it is a high milage engine you will have much higher cost.

You can buy really good, upgraded short blocks from SLP, MTI, HP Engineering, etc., that pretty much rival the cost you could hit for a good rebuild with premium parts. Our Camaro has a bulletproof 408 cube short block by HP egnineering -- Eagle crank and rods, prekum bearings, etc., -- cost $3500 complete.
