Default need serious help!!!

i just bought a '98 M6 coupe about 2 months ago. it has right over 80k miles on it and i believe i am the 3rd owner so i dont know how hard it was driven. i was going down the highway on my way to work when i downshifted from 6th to 5th to pass someone. when i went to throw it into to 5th it seemed as if it didnt want to go into gear. i had to leave it in neutral then press the clutch pedal again to shift to 5th. that right there sent up a red flag with me. after i got onto the city roads i noticed that it made some sort of a grinding noise when it hit 2000 rpm(just over my normal shift point btw). then as i shifted in and out of gear there was a clunking noise. it is still driveable i just dont want to cause any further damage. i have no idea what could be going on(this is my first straight drive since i was 17 and this sort of thing never happend). and if it is any help the clunking noise comes from right under the shifter and the grinding noise comes from where i would expect the clutch and driveshaft area to be. i also dont believe it is a tranny problem because i can put it into nuetral and it still makes the grinding noise at 2k rpm but if i press in the clutch and rev then it doenst make the noise. any info or guidance will be greatly appreciated.

If the noise changes when depress the clutch, it may be the throwout bearing which is attached to slave cylinder. If you had to pump the pedal to get it in gear, the slave might have give up on you. Putting a slave in is a daunting task to say the least (you have to remove rear end, just did one), so I would have it checked out by your mechanic first. []
