I have seen the ebay short shifters and they look pretty similar to the hurst and B&m style. Is there really that much of a difference, the design seems pretty simple.

 

The main difference is probably because they are made in China. Still, I'd stick with name brands. I once bought a set of drills on Ebay - never again. some were warped so bad that the drilled hole was way too large.
