i have a 2001ld likecorvette z06 with 40,000 miles on it. i would like to know what kind of oil to use. and what kind of oil filter. and should i change the transmission oil as well. i purchased the vehicle from a dealer and well they did the whole point inspection and everything, but would like to know if i should change it, at least what type of oil to use

 

Use Mobil 1 all synthetic - I used the top grade Model 1 at about $9-$10 a quart, 5W50, I think was the rating. The filter you can buy at the dealer or probably for less at any Autozone, Pep-Boys, etc., - the books near the filter section will list which model is right or you can ask the counter guys. Also note you should think about changing the filler plug gasket (small metal washer like thing that fits around the oil drain plug) each time you change the oil. The dealer usually has this with the filter if you model needs it

 

always use Mobile 1....believe it or not Wal-Mart has 5qrt containers of it for about $25, sometimes cheaper than that....the filter will have to be gotten elsewhere though

 

I researched this question around 5 years ago when I bought my Tahoe. I came to the conclusion that AMSOIL was the best....but my opinion only. Mobil 1 is also very good and would be my second choice. You probably haven't heard of it...and they do that by design...so as to not spend millions on advertising. Once into it...a lot of guys that race (drag, dirt, motocross, etc) have used it for years and swear by it. Yes...I am a AMSOIL dealer...and sell it to my Air Force buddies...so I am biased yes...but wouldn't have anything against Mobil1 either.

Definitely watch oil filters though. FRAM and some of the other "popular" filters are absolutely HORRIBLE when it comes to doing their actual job. There are no government guidelines, so a company can say whatever they want...but when they are actually put to the test, they actually don't filter all that much. AMSOIL makes synthetic filters that are very very efficient at the 15 micron level...to be exact they are over 98% efficient...and a comparable fram filter would be lucky to be around 40% efficient at taking the very small particles out of your oil.

Sorry to ramble...I dork out when it comes to oil/filters.... Haven't seen too much about AMSOIL on here...maybe some of the gear head experts will have something to say about them...good or bad.

 

i also deal Amsoil, and its good stuff. had a few race cars, track cars, 4bys, etc, they all get it. great for the diff too. i personally don't like it in the tranny though. too slippery, and i like to change that lots, keeps an eye on whats going on in there.so i do freq tranny services and filters.

I make a strict policy of always following manufacturers recommendations on lubricants, and if the recommenda specific brand, I use that.

GM put Mobil 1 in at the factory and recommends it, so I'd use that. Other synthetics are good, but you just don't know. My Aston came with strict instructions to use a particular grade and type of synthetic Castrol that runs about $18 a quart and is damn difficult to get. Turns out it has trace amounts of lithum and copper in the block and heads that mean certain additives that might be in other premium oils would cause very slight cathodic corrosion: you can't be sure when a manufacturer makes a recommendation. There might be definate reasons.
