Welcome to the forum.

I would start by replacing the ignition lock assembly. It is relatively easy to do. You need to pull the steering wheel.

I took apart the steering wheel and got down as far as the turn signal. I don't know how to get passed that and was told not to take that apart.

Any advice?

You'll need a tool to push the steering wheel plate down against the spring to allow removal of the little wire lock ring. That will allow it to be removed from the shaft which IIRC will get you access to the ignition after removal of the turn signal stuff.

I think I got my tool from JC Whitney but it was about 30 years ago.
