I've noticed that sometimes when I drive my car (usually when I first start driving and the car hasn't really warmed up yet) that if I do a quick shift from either 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th that the gears will grind[:@]. If I shift at a normal speed nothing happens but if I try to do a fast shift it will happen. Anybody have an ideas why the trans is doing this?[sm=dontgetit.gif] I'm guessing the gears aren't engaging fast enough when the car is cold, but I don't know much about transmissions. whats up play,well inside that tranny, you have synchronizers and gears, and berings,the synchronizers have a clutch like lineing around the bottom of ring, so when u shift your car the shifter moves a dog, wich is conected to a ring, with a groove that is conected to the cluster gear,the dog moves the rings thus pushing the synchronizers, wich have pointed teath wich engage or mesh with the gear, this will cause a grind in the gears when u shift,eather your cluch lining is wering off and taking time for it to grab,and the synchronizer is not meshing with the gear and cousing a gring, because the clutch lining slowes down the the gear so it can mesh with smothness,but if lining weres out it cant slow down,it is moveing to fast, so it will have to grind togeather to mesh in, and catch,and then by grinding the gears and synchronizers to geather u are wipeing out the little teeth on bothe parts,and then starts to grind all the time,or when the tranny get hot every thing exspands and starts to grab better,or your synchronizers are taking a crap,do u do a lot of power shifting,and do u rest your hand on the shifter alot when u drive, cause if u do, your shifter is strait in your tranny,so by resting your hand on it when u drive you are moving it back and forth not much, you will not even notice that u are moving it ,wich weares out the dogs in the top of the case that can couse shifting problems,on the m21 and m22 it did not matter cause the shifter was mounted on the side of the case,so u could rest your hand on top of the shift ball, not from top to inside,check your oil level.,and dont use gear oil,u need to use dextron 2 or 3. for those cluches.the oil should be red,and how is your cluch check and see if u have travel with the pedal, check fluid level in slave cylinder,your pedal should be at the top,if your cluch is not engageing all the way it will grind to,that is really all i can tell u with out me driving the car,or seeing the tranny,i have rebilt many trannys , aoutomatic and standerdshifts,and i have distroyed about 8 standerd shift trannys from drag racing ,ford and chevy,and have fixed them all,if u have any questions please feal free to ask me ,thanks

Thanks for the info. From what you described it sounds like the linings may be worn out and as you said I do rest my hand on the shift pretty much all the time. In about a week or so I am going to have a place called Tony's Corvettes here in Maryland perform a 25K mile service and he said he is going to replace all my fluids (that need to be replaced). I will also have him drive my car and see what he says about it. In the mean time I will do as you suggested and check my fluid color and level. As for the clutch pedal it feels as if it is engaging completely and it is all the way at the top. Thanks for the help.

 

My experience is that third gear synchros tend to go first on these cars. Haven't heard much about 2nd. I'd check everythin mentioned above but maybe invest in having a good independent shop look it over, too. It might be something minor, a shift linkage slightly out of adjustment, although . . . probably not.

 

Hey "Play" - Good choice with Tony's Corvette. I live in Gaithersburg and he does the work on my 92. He has a good reputation and seems to know what he is doing and has been in business for quite some time.

 

I purchased my car in early Sept of last year and took it to Corvette Day at Capitol Raceway and meet Tony there. He seemed like a very nice guy and I was impressed with him in just a few minutes of conversation. Aside from that I have also heard a lot of good things about him and his shop. This will be my first time going to his shop and I look forward to checking out his facility.
