Grinding in Reverse??? Help!
Hey everyone......as luck would have it....this doesn't give me a lot of confidence.....I just got a 2002 Z06 about 1 1/2 weeks ago....and I noticed sometimes when I put it in reverse....let the clutch out.....it will pop out of gear and make a grinding noise...not real loud....but noticable. Sometimes it will actually go backwards a little bit before it pops out of gear, other times it will grind/pop out of gear without even moving. Yet other times it will backup just fine and not do this at all. I thought maybe it was me....but I put it in reverse firmly before letting the clutch out.....so I am 99% sure it isn't me not just getting it all the way in gear....because it is definitely all the way up and in reverse......and then 2 Chevy dealer guys (I had them push out the brake fluid for racing stuff yesterday) had the same thing happen to them..a handfull of times..... It is a GM Certified Used car with now 3300 miles on it....so I'm wondering how the reverse gear could be damged.....I haven't asked the questions yet....as if since it has that "extended warranty" if they can just tear it apart to see if something is wrong and be fine...or if they don't find anything, then do I have to pay them for it? But I definitely don't want to wait past that 3 months/3000 mile point and then have the reverse completely crap out....Anybody have any insight on this? Thanks in advance.

Well, you wouldn't be the first C5 owner to have this happen....

....although it IS rare.
About the dealership: Tell the service manager that is popping out of reverse and let them decide how they will fix it. If they deceide they need to tear down the tranny, then it is on their nickle. Hopefully, it just needs an adjustment, but if a tranny is required, they should pay (if it's a GMCC warranty).
Many years ago when I bought a used Mazda RX3, I noticed that at high rpm, the shifter would grind into gear. The mechanic told me that the synchro was worn, but "it won't bother you unless you shift at high rpm." I told him ..."then it WOULD bother me and you guys need to fix it if you want me to buy this car"

Any other thoughts on this? Just looking to see if anyone else has heard of this...and/or seen it before. I am still waiting on the dealer where I got it to get back to me....and then schedule it in to see the local chevy dealer here. I was a little pissed....since it started doing this a few days after I got it....and I talked the dealer where I got it, to pay the $100 deductible....I thought that was the least they could do....I really hope it is an adjustment....if not, they better freakin' put in a brand new tranny....no rebuilt crap with more than the 3200 miles than what's on it now! Thanks in advance.

Just an update: my car is at the dealership as I type this......turns out I have a $0 deductible....so I lucked out. At any rate, I put an update on here when I find out what they are going to do. Luckily, when I brought it to them on Friday, their tranny specialist got in it and when he went to back it up, it popped out/grinded for him, too.....2 or 3 times. So we will see what Chevy does with it.
Well...got my car back....after 2 weeks! Talk about great timing....summer time and all. At any rate, they basically tore the back end of the car apart to get the tranny out. Once they took it apart...the teeth on the reverse gear were just about completly worn off as well as the black plastic pads in the fork....not sure exactly what all that is...but that is what they showed me. You could see metal on the magnets as well as the pieces of the black platic from the fork. I took some pictures....but haven't seen how they turned out yet...I will post them if they turned out. It was a little nerve racking to see the entire real end of my car taken apart....thank GOD it was under warranty. Over $600 in parts alone...not to mention the labor.

I posted a "hard shifting" complaint on the forum. My tansmission was doing the same thing but alos in 1st 2nd and 3rd. Someone answered who had the same problem and found that a nw shifter cure his problem completely. So I looked on E-bay and found a new Hurst shifter for $162. I should get it Monday and hopefully it will solve my problem also. If it does it will be the cheapest thing to try. I fit works, I will report back to the forum.
