How to retro fit '86 from R12 to R134A
There are many examples on youtube on how to do retro fits. I'd say they are easier to watch than trying to explain. I have done a few conversions and they work ok, If you could stick with R12 would be the best. There are some R134A freon's more efficient than others. If you go the 134 route, shop around.
R-12 is nearly impossible to buy. Are you planning on doing the conversion yourself or taking it to a local shop?
It involves changing all of the O- rings in the system and if I remember correctly you need to change the poppet valves in the compressor. There are kits out there, not a fun job, but not impossible either...

I Have switched over many R12 systems by flushing and evacuating, changing the oil and they have worked fine for me. Nowadays I would be more interested in switching to the new R1234YF (propane) Haven't checked in awhile about a retrofit, Better than R134, no cfc's. I need to check into that..
