I get an audible whine from the rear end under moderate to heavy acceleration. I hear it mostly in 3rd gear. It's not so loud in 1st or 2nd and I usually don’t do heavy acceleration in 4th or above.

I’ve only had the car for about a month and the noise has always been there.

The car is under warranty until March of 07 but it’s going to be in winter storage soon and will probably be there when the warranty runs out.

My question is: is this whine normal or should I have the dealer check it out?

I would definately have this checked out before you put in storage, atleast you would have a record of it. If the whine is that noticeable, than it doesn't sound normal to me.

 

Haqve the dealer check this out. Among the six gears you have in that gearbox, third is arguably the weakest (actually sixth is, but people rarely abuse sixth, third gets banged all the time). Problems with third start with a whine or "whirring" under acceleration and gradually it gets worse until it sounds like a coffee grinder anytime you are in the gear. Then one day it just doesn't work. By that time, the metal scrapnel from third gear has chewed up the rest of your gearbox, too. (Sorry to be so cheerful).

Get it checked out. If they do nothing, demand and keep paperwork showing you complained about the problem. Take it to an independent garage and try to get a written opinon it is going bad, then keep the paperwork for the day when you confront the dealer.
