Won't start
Had my 75 L82 for 2 years and never had aproblem. Don'trun it much (once a month) and yesterday when I went to start it it would not even turn over....nothing! Clock is running and I have lights. Could it be the alternator or starter?
Hi...first I would check and make sure the battery has a full charge before I did anything. You may have enough charge to run the lights, but not enough to activate the starter solenoid. Let us know what you find out.
Ignition switch, clutch switch, neutral safety switch, starter solenoid, starter motor, battery, and all wiring and connections in between. This is what makes up the starting circuit, just check the easiest things you can get to first. You can hot-wire the starter at the solenoid to see if either or both of them work then move up the wiring from there. Do as rshiver recommends and make sure the battery is capable of turning the starter over.
Alternator has no effect on starting, unless it has gone bad and your battery has lost charge. But, check battery charge first. Just because the battery has a low charge, doesn't mean the alternator is bad. Most parts stores can bench test your alternator.
