New to site searching for a water leak solution
Hi,
I have been one of those fools restoring a 1984 Corvette, crossfire, lol. I have had it on the road off and on for a year and while not finished, I am close. My problem is now the water leaks around the A pillar or windshield frame. The window was replaced a year ago and is sealed really well. It is the moldings that go around the windshield that I am having problems with. I never drove the car before the new windshield was installed. The moldings had to be removed in order to replace the windshield of course. I don't think the installers had a real concept of the sealing of the molding. I bought a cheap rubber seal for the windshield that is the usual one piece design going up both A pillars and on the top front edge.
So, to today. I bought an OEM type front rubber seal for the A pillars. It does look much better than the first one. I took the moldings off, top and both sides. Basically, thin 2 piece metal on the sides and one curved piece on top. All 3 with groves to hold and install the rubber seal. I hope to hear from someone that has successfully done this a time or 2 to find out about the sealant for the metal trim moldings. I can post photos to show the areas I am referring to.
It appears as though there was some sort of tarry based paper that provided the seal between the 3 metal moldings. I would imagine 3M adhesive tape would work well also. Its just that as it rains, the water goes under the front lip of the metal moldings, and runs down the space between the moldings and the windshield frame and somehow seeps between the moldings and into the car. As I said before, the windshield is sealed right, so its not leaking under the glass.
As I try to explain it seems more confusing to describe the problem. That is why I am hoping for an owner who has successfully tackled this problem and how or a link that shows the proper way to accomplish what I need. I will hope for the best and hope to use this site a lot more.
Thanks
Russ
