Wow! That brings back memories. I grew up in Houston (westbury area, then when I worked for Houston Light and Power, out in Alief). Did a lot of autocrosses in in an MG Midget in the parking lot of the Sharpstown Shopping Center (don't know if it is even still there), and used to top out my Austin Healey 3000 (127 mph indicated in 4th overdrive) on US-59 heading southwest from there toward Sugarland.

Definately won't be doin' the top-end play on 59 any more! Beltway 8 has been used for that occasionally(it's complete now). Couple spots on 45 south if ya pick your time. All the local PD's patrol pretty heavy now and don't show much love.

Cool, we are kinda neighbors. I live in Beaumont area. Actually, in Lumberton. My auto repair shop is in Beaumont, though. [8D]

I can imagine. In the late 70s it was different. I worked downtown and would drive in early to beat the traffic. I used to top out my Fiat 124 Spyder (it could only do about 110) around 6:30 in the morning, top down, on 59 well into town -- the section where it passes north of Bellaire and University and seems like its down in a manmade canyon --there are no entrances or exits. It was just empty at that time of day. Now I imagine it is wall to wall cars all hours of the day.

Hey y'all. The Benz had more body roll than the 84 (it's an SLK350 2005 w/sport package) but beat all the C4's also, except mine-I wasn't sandbagging, it felt faster. had to disengage the handling nanny to get a good time out of it though. Lee: 59 is absolutely congested now, it's one of the worst in the country. still like a canyon, 8 lanes wide. 3 or 4 in the morning you could do that but if ya don't get chased it'd be a miracle. Beltway 8 is the best place for quasi(ill)legal shenanigans.

Had a blast. Been doin' the bike thing for about a decade now, but it was my first run in a pack of vettes. Awesome time! Pictures do no justice!
