alt. upgrade(still dimming)
Ok.. Here is the deal, The Ohio Generator is aswsome, 245 amp, And the voltage is staying regular or at least neverbelow 12 volt, But my lights STILL DIMM....we re-did the alt. the charge wire, and i have an extra battery, 0 gage wire. What the @#$%? So on Monday we are going to start redoing all my ground wires. Any Ideas? Help me out fellas......
Tripleblack may not be a welder himself but the charging system in the vette could do some extreme damage, if your really putting out 245 amps your going to need that single ought cable from the alternator to the battery bank. The voltage should be 13.2-14.8 w/ the engine running and with that kind of ampacity it should be a steady volt reading with any load. If your having dimming trouble @ the headlights then I think your looking in the right direction with regards to the system grounds, you need good clean terminals, no overheated wires, and it would'nt hurt to run extra ground wires back to the battery. If the grounds are back in good shape and you still have low output at the lights then start checking and upgrading the hot side of the cicuit in question.
Ive been doing some research, and on my next day off Im going to hook a ground wire from the alt. bracket to the frame the car, Ive found that the alt. bracket is the ground itself, and that my not be enough of a ground. as well as redoing the battery ground, and Im going to get a new battery. The battery i have now is 8 years old. I have allready ran the new charge wire from the alt. to the battery. And the 12volt(hot) side seems fine. So Im thinking it has to be a ground issue.
You need to beef up all your grounds. electricity needs to flow evenly on both sides. Are your amps grounded to the frame? do you have a dual battery isolator? are both your batteries the exact same capacity? Are the batteries grounded to the frame with the same guage wire that your powering your amps with?
