Default 74 Transmission

New to the sharks and need to know if it is normal for the shifter and center console area to become extremely hot to touch when driving? I do not notice any shifting problems etc. on my 74 convertible but would like to know if this is normal or a sign of problems to come.

Mine did this also. At first I was alarmed, but after having pulled the tranny, engine and exhaust, I found no abnormalties. I think that's just the way it is.

There's probably insulation that's gone from the body underneath...

I know what he's talkin' about, the shifter itself gets hot to the touch, and hot air blows up through the shifting boot. I'm wonderin' if anyone knows of the operating temp of the tranny?

Hi dtrospi, and welcome to the forum, I no what you mean about the heat from the shifter. Go to www.corvettecentral.com and take a look at 533566 and 533565 tunnel foam and transmission tunnel insulation, and check out 533046 the lower shifter seal, these parts will make your car a lot cooler.
Trans temp? I'll guess it's about 230 but thats just a guess.
Enjoy your new Vette, PG

I don't think a manual will get close to 200 degrees. An auto will depending on load and coolant temp since the tranny cooler is in the radiator.

I have a 74 with a 4 speed and Hurst shifter.
I have noticed the shifter getting pretty warm but like (PG) I figured it was due to lack of insulation.
