Welcome to CF. I remember reading back in my younger days about guys doing just what you mentioned for drag racing cuz the IRS just wouldn't take the abuse. Haven't seen anything recently tho but there's plenty of folks on this forum that probably can help you.

The Ford 9" has been used in alot of things over the years, from drag racing to lowriders, because they're so strong. With a Detroit Locker, they're ready for alot of abuse. (some of the 9" housings can take a 9 1/4" ring gear as the housing is slotted inside-I have one in my '62 p/u) If you're going to drag race, it'd be worth it, but if just for the street, I'm sure you can make the independent set-up work well, even with worked big block HP. Check out what the mid to late '60s 'Vettes w/ 427s used in the factory set-up.
Good Luck, sounds like you're building a "For Real" 'Vette.
