The insurance company just valued my dads car at $215,000. I am just curious if this can be right?

It is a 1969 convertible stingray, 427, he is the original owner 59,000 miles. It's been repainted original color, added telescoping wheel, power steering, and new sound system. It has a new top and carbarator but everything else is original. Due to him being in the military it's been stored in our garage for periods of time, it has been a ritual sin e we were kids to start the car every 2 days.

The truth is my dad can't drive it anymore so I take it out occasionally but it's not practical and we have been trying to convince him that it's better off going to someone who will love and care for it. we are all very attached to it so it's hard.
I was actually conceived in it, something I try not to think about when I drive it.

The only thing that got us taking about selling was that insurance appraisal. It would be easier to part with knowing my dad could retire.

Anyway, I appreciate if someone can tell me if that sounds right and if so, where is the best place to put it out there and see if we can find a buyer?

About the only way you could get $215K would be if it was a L-88. Check Mecum's and Barrett-Jackson auction results for similar cars.

Post some pics and maybe I can tell you more.

 

Sorry my dad is out of town so I can't ask him. I just know they said the care is really rare. He also kept a binder of every single thing done, every receipt and kept all the parts that were ever replaced etc.

The biggest thing to remember is that the car is only worth what someone will pay for it. In the present market a 69 big block roadster will bring no more than $90,000 to $130,000 in pristine condition.

 

Well it's not a L-88, so I'm going w/ the above estimate. Was open for some shots of the engine.

One thing that would increase value would be to take it to a NCRS show and try to get a Survivor award.

Did the insurance appraiser give you a breakdown of how he arrived at his appraisal.

They were using some computer system where they plugged the info, similar to KBB. Then they went out and looked at some various sites selling similar cars and that is what they came up with.

Regarding award, Unfortunately were in Hawaii and are limited on where we can take it unless we ship it.

So, I guess there is someone from Barrat Jackson going to be out here in March so I will have them come and value it and see if we can include it in the April auction.

Interesting story, I had a guy stop me in a parking lot last year who asked me a lot of questions about the car, said he works for Jay Leno and that if I was every interested in selling the car, to call him and gave me his card. Unfortunately I can't find it!

 

Be aware that B-J Auction doesn't allow a reserve. Everything sells. Mecum does allow a reserve.

I'm sure you can do a web search and find someway to contact Jay.

Do you know what info the appraiser plugged in the computer? That might enable us to give you a more informed opinion on value.
