I had to go back and read the original post a couple of times to make sure I was on track. It's an eye thing with me too.

thanks for the advice............black on black 80 vette (gotta get some pics to you guys).....gear drive replaces timing chain..no stretch over time and pete jackson brand has no backlash...is that resistor the one bolted on the motor? it connects to the coil opposite the battery lead in....................

Yes, I think were talking about the same thing, do you have a shop manual?
Black on black sounds nice and thanks for the info on the pj gear, PG.

Hey headhunter, the capacitor that's bolted to the intake manifold with one lead to the distributor is a filter for the tachometer, that won't have any effect on the spark. The 12 gage red wire that is plugged into the "BATT" terminal is the one your going to focus on, it is the feed for the ignition, put a test light or volt meter on it and you should see battery voltage with the ignition key in the run position, if you don't have power then start tracing it till you find battery voltage.
