Welcome to CF!
Drop the tranny, you are quite possibly hangin' up on the clutch assembly.
When I pull an engine, I drop the tranny and pull the engine with the bell atached. Since you have the bell loose, you are most likely binding the tranny shaft on the clutch assembly, which is still bolted to the flywheel.

You should pull the trans because you are going to bust your a__ trying to get the engine back in with the trans still in. I pulled my 454 out before I decided to take the body off but I pulled the trans out first and I still couldn't get the engine out until I took the bellhousing off also. I couldn't get the engine to lift up high enough to clear the motor mount brackets without having the bell hit the firewall. Not a whole lot of room in there with the manifolds and everything else on.

With the tranny out, you can quite possibly tilt the front of the engine up, to get the bell to clear, but since you have the bell loose, all the better.

I pulled the tranny with the engine but did have to tilt quite a bit. It's a lot easier to assemble tranny to engine out of the car.
