Hi 74owner, I'd say that someone has one of the instrument cluster back lights wired into the seatbelt light socket, I'm only guessing at this not knowing the wiring on the 74's. My '78 has a printed circuit for all of the instruments and it's pretty tough to get anything mixed up on it. Poke your head under the dash and see if you can turn the bulbs out with the wire attached, if so you should be able to swap them around to get the desired results.

Right on 78buckshot, could be the wrong bulb in the wrong hole. Not an easy repair. There is also a "Head Light" bulb on the right side on the console, that bulb goes on after you pull the headlight switch and goes off when the headlights are lock up, could that be in the wrong hole?
Hi 1974corvetteowner, do you have any repair manuals? PG

pg, do the 74's have the printed circuit for the instruments?

No, just a bunch of wires back there. The graywires power all the light bulbs in the instrument clusterand a yellow/black and yellow to the seat belt light. PG

All right then, that should put 74owner on the right track, thanks for the insight on the dash wiring pg, I'll just tuck that away for future reference.

While this might not be the cause, if you eliminate the obvious ones suggested above, then don't forget that '74 was the year of the infamous "starter interlock" [:'(] where the starter wouldn't start w/o the seatbelts being fastened. Big Brother came ten years too early. [:@]
