Default Timing Gear

I have 1968 327. I have done many timing gears in my 54 yrs, but i have never done a double roller. There are three keyways, O.E.M.,Advance,&retard. Since my dots on the crank & cam gear only line up on the O.E.M. keyway, how do i put the crank gear on? Do i just line my dots up pull the crank gear and put it at the setting i want? THANKS

hey champ, unless your running a pretty agressive cam, I would keep the timing marks lined up straight, you can allways advance or retard at the distributor much easier than tearing the front cover off .

Advancing the ignition timing is entirely different that advancing the cam.

If you are running a basically stock 327, use the OEM alignment on thegears. There is no need to advance a stock or mild cam.

sorry guys, i forgot to tell you about motor. 327, bored .30 over, flat top pistons, competion valve job, radical cam, heads are LT1 370 H.P. This car was built by second owner,a automotive engineer. It was built for street racing. I bought from 3rd owner who said he had it dyno at 430H.P. 400 ft lbs of torque. a double roller was on car when i pulled timing gears it was set on setting for low end torque. now im unsure how to put new gear back on like it was .THANKS

Only a dyno will tell you if advancing or retarding the cam will help. Its all about trading high end HP numbers for torque. If you have the specs on the cam, the tools and the knowledge Id degree it to the manufacturers specs or see if the engine builder already did. Cam timing has nothing to do with ignition timing as was mentioned.
