Question 1988 Z52 Idle Issues

Hi all. Really hoping someone can help me with an idling issue. In late August, While crawling home in a stop & go traffic jam, the car would not maintain running idle or sufficient oil pressure when stopped. I replaced the oils pressure sensor and no pressure issues since. However about 1/3 of the time, while waiting at a light, the car will not maintain sufficient idle speed. 2/3 of the time, perfectly steady @ 600. When not maintaining the 1/3 time, idle goes usually from 500 to 800. Once in a great while as low as 400 and as high as 1100 or even 1200 a couple of times. Anything below 500 can cause a stall at acceleration for green light.

Have you tried a Google search on that issue? There is a lot of information out that might apply to your situation. Things light bad fuel injectors, bad MAF sensor, idle control solenoid, ingition module. A shop manual is always helpful also. It's an age old problem, I would check out some of the older forums and see if that helps. It becomes a guessing game until everything is checked out.

I had an '87 IROC-Z that exhibited similar symptoms. It wouldn't idle very good without keeping your foot on the accelerator, but once you got to about 25 to 30 miles per hour, it was just fine. Turned out that it was a bad fuel pump. You can get a fuel pressure gauge at Harbor Freight for about $25 to $30.
