I have just replaced the top on my '92 convertible and it is not a job for the meek. What a pain in the a$$. What made it worse was the aluminum fram had major oxidation, and the black paint was flaking off underneath the original top. In order to prepare the fram to accept new contact cement, I had to scrap and wire brush the frame as clean as I could. This was very time consuming, but necessary. In addition, new weather striping was needed since the original weather stripping was detroyed getting the old top off.

Overall, the top looks great, but the installation is very time consuming to do it right - just FYI.

I was thinking of replacing the top on my 89, but have a professional top guy who will do it for $200. After reading what you went through, I think I'll pay the money to have him replace it. Brought the top on ebay.

FYI - you may want to order the "weather striping kit" as well because the factory used liberal amounts of contact cement and you cannot remove (all) the original weather striping without tearing or ripping it to pieces. Some pieces may be reusable, but 80% cannot be. At least my '92 was that way, but I am not certain about your '89. You may want to ask a person who has Corvette experience.

Most aftermarket top manufacturers are "close but no cigar". Goto www.aabestco.com and look for a convertible top there. They go on easier and fit.
