Default 92 coupe horn problem

Hi guys:

New Corvette owner here. Evaluating the machine after bringing it home. Discovered the horn doesn't work. Screams bloody Hell when you set off the anti-theft alarm, so I know that the horn itself works fine. Not a peep when you push the steering wheel horn tabs. Any thoughts on how to diagnose/cure this problem?

Thanks!

I assume I'll be here a lot in the coming months!

Hey there!

I had the same problem when I had first bought my 94 coupe. I took the face of the steering wheel off and discovered that the Horn Buttons had been COMPLETELY destroyed. It looked like someone had gotten pretty pissed and started punching the steering wheel. The plastic pieces were all broken inside. To make a long story short, once you take the face of the steering wheel off, it is pretty self explanitory. You will probably need to buy two new buttons and i think that cost me like 30 bucks. Anyway, good luck and if i am wrong then i have no clue what the problem is . Have fun

Matt

Had the same prob.....forgot where I found the link for the fix.
You have to take the front panel off. 2 screws behind the front steering wheel panel. Have to unhook air bag(careful) and set it down out of the way. There's a plunger type device that comes off both switches that popped out on mine. Just have to rearrange it so it stays down. Don't be afraid of the air bag it took me 15 mins once I got the proper driver head. One of those star type (torque?)
Good Luck....let me know how it goes.
BETTER THAN PAYING SOMEONE $200.

Thanks guys.

Can you give me a little more info on the airbag situation? Does it come all the way off....or does it still stay connected to the steering column by wiring?

REALLY don't want to foul it up...set it off....or screw up any sensors.

Thanks!

Very first thing, disconnect your battery for a couple of minutes to allow charging capacitors to discharge on the airbag circuit. Don't want no black eyes while working on steering column [:-]. If the mechanism appears ok, check the horn relay. I'll have to get back to you on the location, but it may be in the fuse, relay center. [8D]

Thanks for the battery heads-up Mech259!

I'm taking the car in to the Pro to get some u-joint work done tomorrow. Told them to fix the horn as well if it can be done for under $100. I'll let ya know. I may end up doing it myself yet.

I appreciate your effort.....THANKS!

Had the pros deal with this one, although I ws tempted....

Turned out to be a poor connection in the steering column someplace.

Don't think I'd have ever found it.

$ well spent, I think.
