Default Axel noise

Recently bought this '92 Coupe.

Brought it home and eventually noticed a "clicking" noise from the rear wheels....both sides..but driver's side worse than passenger's.

Thought maybe u-joints....or wheel bearings....took it to the Vette guru mechanic (dealer) in our area.

Determined that bearings and u-joints were fine, but that there was play in the splines in the end of the axels. Not enough play to replace...just enough to create noise. That's above my pay grade, but that's what the pros said. To fix the problem they applied silicone to the splines to absorb the slack.

Voila! No noise now.... Labor charge $75!!!....No parts involved....

Whaddya think????

Seems like a great deal to me, instead of replacing 4 u-joints at $500 or more.

For what it's worth!

I found your post interesting, because my 92 coupe also has a click on torque reversal and it has 4 new u-joints in the rear. I do know the splines are worn because I have tried to tighten the shafts tight enough to eliminate the movement.
Perhaps when my new garage is built I can look into it some more.
Do you know what was used on your splines, is this a hardening silicone gasket maker?

Not sure, but got the impression it was just regular silicone sealer.

I too have the "clicking" noise in the rear wheel are of my 92. Found to be the emergency brake out of adjustment. Just a little more input for ya!

After looking into this on a GM technician forum, I got recomendations to use either Anti Seize compound or teflon pipe thread sealant on the rear axle splines.
So, I took out both axle shafts, wire brushed the splines then coated everything with Anti seize. The rear end of the car is nice & quiet now.

I'm glad I read this post. For two years now, my 87 Vette has had these same clicking noises in the left rear wheel. My mechanic took the whole left wheel assembly off the axle, check everything out and couldn't find the root cause of this "clicking" noise. My Vette is coming out of Winter storage next month and I will have him check that very same thing you did. Thanks for the post.
