Default Engine main seal

Greetings:

Been working on the oil leaks on my 89. So far I've replaced the intake, andoil pan gaskets. The engine has 135,000 on her with no major repairs. I still have a leak that appears to be coming from the side of the bellhousing, runningdown both sides, when the engine is running.. It's engine oil for sure. Everyone I spoke with said they think it is a main seal. What shouldI look for before I have someone replace the seal? The back toppart of the bellhousing behind the engine is dry, so the ATV seal there is good.
One other thing, is it nessary to replace the flywheel if I'm going to repalce the cluch when its all a part?

Thanks in advance for your help.

hey if it was me i would check the intake gascket /valve cover gascket or oil sending unit if it was the the rear main seal it would be comeing out of the dust cover at the bottom of your bellhousing v-8 chevys are bad about rear intake gascket leaking you said it was replaced look down at rear of the engine see if you can see it pushed out any place well i hope this helps

Check your flywheel ring gear and the clutch surface ( heat checking ,warpage and cracks ) did the clutch vibrate badly when engaging. if any of these are bad replace, (Ring gear can be replaced separately)

If you're getting a new clutch, I'd definately at the very least get your flywheel turned... it'll make your new clutch last a lot longer. Good luck, and keep us posted!

The top of the bell being clean, I suspect the valve cover gaskets, since the oil is running down both sides of the bell. And yes, the main will leak out the bottom of the bell.
Yes, resurface the fly wheel.

Mine was valve cover gaskets. If it were a main seal, it probably would not leak too much, and it would leak from the bottom of the bell housing.
