fuel pump misshap
The other day I was playing in the driveway with my '87 coupe. I stomped the gas and the tires broke loose and she fishtailed. made it to the end of the driveway and quit. turns out the fuel pump went out. it was not even 5 months old. any thought as to why this would happen? It kinda makes me wary of taking fast corners now.

If you run your vette low on gas a lot, it can burn the fuel pump up because it will become starved when you take hard corners. I had a pump die on me after only a few months but that is because i did not install a new sock filter. the screen on the intake of the pump had so much crap in it i couldnt believe it.
what orientaition did you install the sock on the pump?

I can't remember exactly what direction the sock was faceing but I replaced the sock and pump exactly as the originals. the tank was more than 3/4 full when this happened. 5 months ago when it went out I just drove to the store and had a full tank. although that was the day after I got it and the previous owner, my cousin, had run it low just before I picked it up. I, my self never run it below1/4.

When I replaced it this time I had more time as I was not in a store parkinglot 1100 mls from home. I looked more closely at the wireing and noticed that the insulation was comeing off. With the latest pump they included new wires so I replaced them as well. I'm not sure if they had anything to do with it but I don't think so as they stayed emersed in gas the whole time it was working fine.

The last one that just went out was an AC Delco but this one is an Autozone special. this makes three counting the original in under 6 months. perhaps there is some other reason besides being cheap.

Need to check voltage supply to pump. Power is redundant to pump. By this I mean there are two supplies for the pump. One through the relay and the other through oil pressure switch. You might one, such as the relay is out and oil pressure switch is acting up. Make sure you have B+ to the pump and a good secure ground. I would not advise an external pump as it may not have enough pressure or volume for your setup. [8D]
