Need help with 1990 automatic trans - appears to be slipping
1990 Corvette convertible, 350 engine, 9.960 miles on it as of today (6,554 miles on it last november 2005)
Today I pulled out from a light and the auto trans took hold and acted normal, however later on when I tromped on it to accelerate, the engine made the normal sounds but the effort was not transferred to the wheels.... in fact, it slowed down a little vs accellerating. I think the trans might be slipping.
The car IS 16 years old and isn't driven much... maybe the bands inside the trans needs adjustment?
Maybe it's just a fluke and I should do more testing over the next few days, huh?
Any ideas?

ADJUST YOUR TV CABLE....... IT IS ON THE DRIVER SIDE ENGINE COMP...ATTACHES TO THE GAS PEDAL LINKAGEAND THROTLE.....HAVE SOME BODY SIT IN THE CAR AND YOU OUT SIDE THE CAR PUSH IN THE BLACK D LOOKING BUTTON AND HAVE THE PERSON STEP ON THE GAS AND OT WILL ADJUST ITSELF... IF IT IS NOT ADJUSTED RIGHT IT WILL COUSE THE TRANNY TO FEEL LIKE IT IS SLIPING AND IT WILL WIPE OUT THE TRANNY IN TIME
Why would you post an answer like that to my serious question? You're tech certified.... and probably have more brains than you're letting onto. Maybe this one has you stumped? A serious answer would be appreciated. For instance, if an automatic trans is 16 years old and has been sitting, and now it finally has 10k miles on it, would it be possible that the torque converter isn't working? No drips on the garage floor either. Could it be the MAP Sensor?

First thing I would do is service transmission first and being it has sat so much, put some trans conditioner in when you service it. Sitting a lot can harden o-rings, seals. Could have some pump pressure bypassing and not putting enough drag on the clutches. [8D]
well you can change your filter take the pan down and change the filter... make sure you have the right amount of fluid...how does the oil smell...does it have a burnt smell to it....i highly dought the converter is sliping....and it is no joke my tranny felt like it was shifting late and it was the tv cable.......bad cluches will make it slip......and seals..it is hard to tell you on line.. i would take it in for service like mech said.......i am only trying to help .you dont have to get offensive with me i am only teling you things to try.....if i could drive the car i could tell you better.....when it come to a tranny it can be manny things....the things i told you to do you can try your self with out bringing to the shop.[8D]
Sorry, I wasn't aware that a Corvette had a TV cable.
Could it also be the MAP sensor? Here's a guy with a similar problem.

But my situation sounds like it's slightly different, in that my engine revs without hiccupping or bogging, and the speed slows down vs speeding up -- kinda like a Governor kicks in...
The Corvette has been perfect until recently. I wanted to have SOME idea of probable causes before I take it to the Corvette Shop nearby; Stoudt's Corvettes in Reading PA.
Thanks

Map sensor will not make the clutches slip in transmission. MAP will affect driveabilty of engine which will seem like trans problems. If your engine performs correctly with no hesitation, no black smoke, correct idle, then it is not the MAP causing your probs.
It turned out to be a clogged Fuel Filter. It was so full of metal particles (apparently from the gas tank) that it could not provide enough fuel to accelerate. Thanks for the ideas guys. It's hard to find anyone locally (Reading PA) who will help teach me more about my Vette, and the local dealers & repair shops have "no visitors in the bay" policy.Case closed.BarryZ
