ok took her to the dealership
and here's the deal/estimate
new tank $3500
7 hours labour @$90/hr
sending unit $1000
fuel pump $300
damper $40
strainer $80
replace fuel lines
replace fuel filter
injector flush
few bolts here and there
maybe new spark plugs
for a grand total of over $6000...keep in mind this is in CANADIAN dollars...yea
basically cuz she hasn't been driven in almost 4 years...the fuel went bad...separated...turned into gunk and the water rotted the fuel tank...he doesn't want used parts on his car but i was wondering if anyone knows if you can get the tank fixed?...is it worth it?...or is it better to just get a new one?....my theory is that due to his stupidity for letting this car sit he should just pay whatever to get it fixed...$6000 to save a $50K car...any advice or tips?

thought so...thanks
Way to much, check with Ecklers about parts. Just bought a sending unit for my 86 for $269.00 from them with the pump included. Dealership is gonna rake you over the coals. It is very time consuming to pull the tank on a C4. The back cover has to come off [:'(] a real pain. Strainer is only $10.00. Fuel lines don't need to be replaced, just flushed good. [8D]
WOW! thats all i have to say. can i have some of that change they are making off that. $80 for a strainer?? what the hell is it made out of?
as far as the tank goes, before taking it out, when you remove the filler/sending unit, there is plenty of room to manuver your arm around. i would drain the gas, and try cleaning the inside by hand. im sure others can fill in on what chemicals to use. its worth a shot before going to all the trouble and $ to take it out and have it replaced.
Real prices on the parts (from autozone) for my 86, cant imagine them being much different
fuel pump $60-100
filter $10
strainer $10-20
pulsator $25
sending unit (if you really need a new one) $350
injector flush $10+ for a bottle of good cleaner or $350 for a nice set of new injectors.
spark plugs and o2 sensor $50
fuel lines will be a pain in the butt to replace. i wonder how well they can be cleaned, or at the least just replacing only the rubber lines.
everything, except pulling the tank, can be done with basic mechanical ability and tools, and a haynes or factory service manual ($20-50)
good luck. we would much rather you post a bunch of questions here than get reemed at the dealership.

What he said!! Cept for the Autozone fuel pump. Go with A/C Delco pump. Sorry Raisin, but Autozone parts in my business are laughers, too cheap, can't tell you how many AZ fuel pumps I have replaced.
