Removing an aftermarket alarm system???

Removing an aftermarket alarm system???
One of my next projects is going to be removing the aftermarket alarm system. Preliminary inspections indicate wires and splices to everywhere.
.
This alarm has a function when you unlock the doors, the windows roll down. I think this alarm was state of the art in 1986, and helpful if you owned a convertible (windows roll down when you unlock door and auto roll up when you lock the doors). I just want it gone. I'm more of a "low jack" person, and VATS.
I have not found any documentation on the alarm, but did find a few universal guides to installing car alarm systems.
If you have any advice or general experience to share with removing and alarm from a C4 corvette...this is the thread.

Take it to a professional......I highly reccomend that. Once you start snipping and unsplicing and re-splicing your bound to mess something up. If it goes by too easy, you have done something wrong.Learn that time and time again.

I don't trust them. I can not find anyone that will pull it...and stand behind there work, or like most say I need to go to a corvette specialist. I think I'm going to take my time and map out where every thing goes. then figure out how to put it all back to original VATS and get it low-jacked. This could take a few hours to firgure out how to approach it. I do have factory wire diagrams[:@]

was up, why cut anything? find the fuse and pull it. i don't trust alarm guys too, had a 88 monte carlo with a alarm and sound system installed and it was stolen to soon after that. if you find the power lead or fuse its just as good as gone.

Match the wires that were spliced by color, remove whatever device was inserted between splices and solder the wires back together again. You'll probably find all splices around the fuse box. Good luck

RE: Removing an aftermarket alarm system???
Let's start with a couple of basic questions:
1) Is the system key actuated? (as opposed to a wireless fob)
2) Have you located the control box (usually under/around the steering column...should also have a manufacturer on it)
If it is key actuated then the lock/unlock on the door wire (light green) is being used to sense and trigger the window relay. The factory wiring would be handling the actual door locks (however, some alarm guys cut the door lock wires and install their own relays). What would really be useful is to get a digital photo posted of the control box that shows the wiring connector going into the box.
I think you should try to kill the power to the box as suggested and determine if the door locks/windows still work. That will tell us how they "spidered" the system in. Several models of alarms actually disable the starter as well so check that when you kill the power to the control box.

RE: Removing an aftermarket alarm system???
I feel for you man.... My 84 i bought had an aftermarket alarm that turned it self on if you used the power locks to lock the doors.. No remote came with it. I know thats the normal VATS, but the aftermarket alarm was tied in with it. I just wanted the weight reduction, and be able to use the power locks when I got out of the car.
(on a side note, everyonce in a while when I tried to start the car I would just get a "click" wiat a few minutes it would start right up.)
I took my time, moved slow and spent about 2 hours figuring out what wires did what. Also had the helms manual right there so I knew which wires where going to what. Took me 2 hours to get it all out, found a hot wire without a wirenut, no electrical tape ziptied to the side of the frame with the wires just twisted togather. (Pink wire... You know one of the HOT wires for the starter/ selinoid cant remember which. Apperantly it was grounding out to the frame sometimes when I went to start the car. Havnt had the click since.)
Best advice I can Give. One wire at a time, Using the helms manual. and take your time, sorry bud, no beer on this repair
The helms is definatly worth it if you dont have one. You can trace the wire off the alarm and when you see it spliced into say the Green-yellow wire, you can look the green-yellow up in the helms and see exactly where that wire goes without having to trace it all the way back.

Where do you find a helms manual, and what is the cost?

RE: Removing an aftermarket alarm system???
Here is a hint for those removing an alarm system: Most Mfg's of alarms don't use the same wiretype, texture, gauge, etc that GM used. It becomes evident as you look over the wires, which are GM wires and which are not.
The installer usually cut a wire (for example rt. frt.power window) to splice in for the windows to roll down when the car is unlock.
mariogarcia stated it simply (a few quotes above).
