Default Shifter Install - 96 LT4

I have searched and been unable to find installation instructions for removing the stock shifter from a 96 LT4 (ZF6 I believe). A friend told me I must drop the transmission to install a new shifter. If anyone has instructions they can post, I'd appreciate it. Specifically, I have a line on a B&M short throw shifter, but have little desire to drop the tranny to get it in there. Any help would be appreciated.

Default RE: Shifter Install - 96 LT4

I just took mine out ofa 93 s/b the same.
Pry the plastic gear indicator out of the top of the shift ****. Use a small screw driver, then use a screw driver to pry the retainer out of the center. Both of these took a lot more preasure than I thought they would.
Then unscrew the shift **** off the top.
Then there is a small allen srew retaining reverse lock-out in place, remove it. The the reverse lock-out should slide off.
You take the consol appart by openning the consol lid and removing the screws towards the shifter.I think there are ony 2 or3 screws whichare actually under the consol bottom cover which you just pry up the corner of the mat. The consol cover lifts up from the back, forward towards the dash with the shift boot attached. This exposes the rubber shift boot which you just undo the nuts holding it to the tunnel. You should now be able to see through to the tani. Climb under the car and you should be able to access the shifter mechanism fairly easily. I beleive you just need to cut the tie holding the protective boot.
Good Luck
