Default Steering Column

I just replaced the ignition switch on an 85 corvette. I am putting everything back that goes in front of the ignition switch. I can't seem to compress the spring enough to get the lock plate back on the column so, that I can get the "C" clip back on. Is there a special tool or a special way to do this. Please advise. Thanks.

Yes there is. I remember somewhere seeing a post on how to make one,but can't remember exactly where. Probably run you less than 20 bucks at the parts store. As far as I know there's really no other way to do that.

Thanks Ron, I actually got it on by having my neighbor push in on one side of the lock plate and by me pushing in the other side. It was a real pain but it is done. I having tried to start the car yet but, I hope everything is O.K.
