transmission
Hey guys, have a question about my fairly new transmission. I have a leak that makes a wet spot in my garage about the size of a baseball every night. Can't get under the car because no jack stands. The leak appears to be a few inches behind the pan. Wondering where it is coming from and how easy or hard it is to fix. Also, this may sound a little strange but is the cooling fan supposed to pull air through the front of the radiator or push air in from back to front? Right now it pulls air through the front of the radiator and blows back toward motor. Call it less than observant behavior but I have never known which direction the air is supposed to go. Thanks for the hints.

RE: transmission
You may need to get some jack stands and do an honest overview of where the leak is coming from. Did a shop replace your transmission? Was there a warranty? If so, you might bring it up with them. If not, you'll have examine it thoroughly. When it comes to leaks I usually assume a gasket wasn't properly installed. I assume the leak you are referring to is automatictransmission fluid (usually reddish pink when healthy). A manual tranny is different and uses gear oil from what I understand.....
...So is your car an auto or a stick?

RE: transmission
It's an auto 700r4. The tranny is under warranty however, the shop that installed it is in So Cal and I now live in Colorado. I think it only has about 5k miles on it. Gonna drive it up on the ramps tomorrow at work and look to see where it is comming from. I'll let ya know.

RE: transmission
Thanks guys. I'll check it out tomorrow. I have a trailer hitch bay at work and it has ramps that I use to install hitches. I can get under it if it's on those ramps. Hey mech259, what if it's the rear seal, how difficult is it to change out? Do I have to remove the transmission?? I ask u because I know that you are in the business and are good at what you do.

RE: transmission
Rear transmission seal is not that hard, just have to remove driveshaft. If the rear seal is leaking after an overhaul, I would check out the driveshaft. I really think it my be your pan gasket. If it is, be careful not to overtorque it and DON'T use silicone.

RE: transmission
Well, I drove the car up on the ramps at work and about 20 minutes after, fluid started to drip slowly, drop by drop out of the rear of the transmission right about where the exhaust comes together into one pipe. Couldn't see around it but I was able to get one finger on the U joint for the front of the drive shaft. It's coming from that area so I assume it is the rear seal. Am I right? Should I have the drive shaft checked for trueness?? Holler at me mech259 or anyone that has had a similar problem and resolved it. Thanks guys

RE: transmission
Ought oh! Spewage is never good. Rear seal shouldn't be too hard to replace though, just messy. Wouldn't hurt to check out the shaft but It might just have been a bad seal or it wasn't installed just right. If it's not tapped in square it will leak. Good luck with it. Cheers

RE: transmission
That is the area of the rear seal. PUll drive shaft and check the input shaft for any scoring. But before pulling it, check for any slack in shaft in the tailshaft bushing. Might need a new yoke if there is any wear in it.
